woman dancing with child in a modern home kitchenElectrification will impact electricity demand in the future and put pressure on the nation’s current electrical grid. Modernizing the grid will be critical to the energy transition and achieving sustainability goals.

Overview

The electric grid in the United States is comprised of three smaller grids: one in the East, one in the West, and one in Texas. There are only a few points where the grids are connected, making the transfer of power between regions a challenge. Investment in new, renewable energy sources has increased in the last decade. The current grid structure is unable to transfer power from these renewable sources the long distances needed to reach customers.

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 is the single largest investment in climate and energy in the country’s history. The package includes a capital investment of $369 billion over 10 years for energy in the form of solar, wind, hydropower, and other renewable sources. It addresses the impacts of extreme weather conditions and reduces risks from attacks on substations by hardening and securing grid assets.

These dynamics result in an increase of investment in grid modernization and improvements across the United States.

Challenge

Nexus began working with one of the nation’s largest investor-owned utilities with thousands of miles of transmission lines and a regulated generating fleet. The firm was challenged with developing a multi-state program to harden, enhance, modernize, and expand the client’s transmission and distribution assets.

Our Team worked to address new and existing substation capacity, in addition to the development of green field substation projects. The client’s substations primarily serve industrial, commercial, and residential customers so reliability is crucial.

Solution

When working on a program of this scale, serving thousands of locations across the Midwest and Mid Atlantic, there is a level of precision required to drive high quality work forward. Our Team leverages the Nexus Project Delivery System to accurately scope projects, track timelines and budgets, estimate project and construction costs, manage change, and capture performance KPIs. Performance data is fed back into the system to make improvements in the program execution.

Within a year of the multi-state program’s launch, Nexus is being recognized as a top-rated engineering partner. The firm is known for its response time, quality, and in-depth knowledge of the client and its business operations. This high level of execution allowed Nexus to expand its program support to include more substations and other assets, further helping the client achieve its goals.

Through the energy transition, gasoline will remain an affordable energy source that many Americans will continue to rely on. Our Team is working on projects to increase efficiency and make oil & gas cleaner for our environment.

Overview:

The oil & gas industry is essential for modern life because it provides electricity to power our homes, workplaces, and schools, in addition to fuel for transportation. It supplies the building blocks for other materials and products that we interact with daily, ranging from electronics to food packaging and asphalt for our roads.

Our world is in the process of a major energy transition. In the long term, more energy will come from electricity and renewables. In the short term, oil & gas production needs to be maintained at existing levels to provide enough fuel to meet growing energy needs. Given this dynamic, there are opportunities to improve refinery operations to achieve national, global, and industry sustainability and climate goals.

The oil & gas industry is supporting these efforts by improving efficiency and reducing emissions.

Nexus has helped refineries across the country achieve their sustainability goals for almost 20 years. An important part of the work that we do is replacing old and outdated equipment that is inefficient, wasteful, and emits pollutants into our atmosphere. In this case study, you’ll learn more about a specific reformer project that led to greater efficiency and productivity with fewer emissions.

Challenge:

One of the biggest barriers to implementing sustainability-based projects is validating the return on investment. New technology, processes, and equipment can be expensive and difficult to introduce into existing facilities, and expected efficiency improvements are often not great enough to justify the investment. For this project to move forward, Nexus was asked to model ROI to increase assurance that this project would be a success.

Integrating new equipment into an existing facility is never an easy task. For this project, Nexus was asked to replace three existing reformer units with a single unit that would increase production capacity and efficiency. This presented multiple challenges, including:

  1. The layout of the area where the new equipment would be placed needed to be changed to accommodate the new reformer.
  2. The existing feedstock needed to be rerouted from multiple sources to the single reformer.
  3. The electrical system needed to be upgraded to accommodate the new equipment.

Lastly, there were staffing gaps in the client’s organizational structure, making it difficult to complete this project. Nexus was asked to provide project management and additional onsite support staff to the client.

Solution:

Referencing a similar client project at another site, Nexus modeled ROI with a degree of confidence that allowed the project to move forward. Nexus engaged with the client and multiple functions internally to ensure this project would be a success, including Project Management, Engineering and Design, and its Onsite Support Team.

Together, the Team tackled the challenges by replacing three pieces of equipment with a single unit and upgrading the refinery’s electrical system. The design outcome that Nexus delivered met the requirements for the new equipment and improved the electricity supply reliability and capacity for the refinery.

Using Nexus’ project management, commissioning, and start-up services, the new reformer was installed successfully and safely. The equipment, which produces high octane gasoline and hydrogen, improved gasoline production efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and lowered environmental emissions at the 100-year-old refinery.

“These solutions really provide us with a platform to be more strategic moving forward,” said the refinery manager. “It makes more gasoline from the same amount of crude, as well as more hydrogen we can use in other parts of the refinery. On many fronts, it makes this facility more competitive.”

Nexus EPCM Expertise Ensures Chemical Manufacturing Reliability

Expedited Engineering, Procurement & Construction Management Reduce Plant Downtime

Overview:

A major chemical manufacturer in the Midwest had been experiencing recurring issues with equipment that had reached the end of its lifecycle. Our client is the leader in TMP and Penta production in the United States. At this site, they manufacture sodium formate, trimethylolpropane, di-pentaerythritol, and pentaerythritol. These products are used for paints, lacquers, and synthetic lubricants. The equipment, which is a vital part of the manufacturer’s process, would frequently malfunction, causing unexpected and costly downtime for the company.

The Nexus team was tasked with conducting a root cause analysis to understand the issues with the existing equipment in order to determine the best replacement option. The team would also have procurement responsibilities for the new equipment, including expediting delivery and construction administration oversight. The goal of the effort was to install a replacement for the equipment before the existing piece reached the end of its life.

Challenge:

The cause of the issues with the existing equipment were unknown at the start of the project. The team began by performing a damage mechanism review and review of metallurgy options relating to the replacement of the equipment. The team also conducted a process simulation to determine the root cause of the issue, and to ensure that the new equipment would last longer in the client’s process conditions.

The project was being conducted on an expedited schedule, presenting challenges to the procurement team. Once the team received the proper equipment specifications, the equipment needed to be expedited to ensure it would arrive on schedule for the client. Working closely with the equipment vendor, Nexus worked to secure an on-time delivery.

Because of the accelerated schedule, many challenges were presented to the construction management team in order to reduce the total amount of outage time for the client.

Solution:

The Nexus Team was able to execute the engineering phase of the project at a fast pace to maintain the schedule and allow the procurement team and construction management team enough time to complete the project before the deadline. To reduce the total downtime during construction, our team had to work with contractors around the clock with pre-turnaround planning and scheduling to ensure a smooth installation.

The accuracy and quality of our engineering, procurement, and construction management allowed the contractors to install the equipment with minimal downtime. All these efforts combined allowed the project delivery to be completed on time with quality results, ensuring that our client’s process was more reliable and would last longer.

The program is effective immediately and will allow Nexus employees to participate in the benefits of company ownership while providing a roadmap for the firm’s continued growth, development, and sustainability.

“We believe in our team that has built Nexus from the ground up and think there is no better group to shepherd Nexus into the future,” shared Marianne Corrao, executive Vice President and Co-Founder of Nexus. “Through the ESOP, our team will be rewarded for future company success.”

An ESOP is a qualified employee retirement and incentive plan that transitions a closely held company to employee ownership. Shares of company stock are allocated to the employees without requiring an out-of-pocket contribution, providing an additional benefit.

“Today’s talented professionals have their choice of companies to work for,” said Lisa Theis, Director of Human Resources at Nexus. “The inherent and proven benefits of a performance-driven employee stock ownership culture will further distinguish Nexus in a competitive job market.”

Nexus was co-founded by Jeff Herzog and Marianne Corrao in 2005 and is co-owned. The ESOP provides a framework for the transition of ownership, giving the company, its team, and its clients confidence in Nexus’ plans for the future.

“Marianne [Corrao] and I are proud of what our Nexus team has accomplished over the past 20 years. It is important for us to have a proactive plan that would transition ownership gradually,” said Jeff Herzog, President and Co-Founder of Nexus. “An ESOP was the most attractive approach because it minimizes the disruption to our team and our clients while promoting quality, efficiency, and a culture of ownership.”

At Nexus Engineering Group, we understand the important role procurement plays in our clients’ industries. As a vital link in the project lifecycle, it’s important to approach procurement with precision and caution to avoid potential traps that can impact project success. We’ve identified four key focus areas that guide our approach.

1. Planning & Performance: Precision from the Start

In our world, procurement is not just a transaction – It is strategic planning at the very core. We invest time and expertise in understanding project requirements, aligning procurement strategies with project goals, and setting the stage for success.

2. Sourcing & Contracting: Building Strong Foundations

Sourcing the right materials and contracting with reliable partners lay the foundation for a successful project. Our approach involves rigorous supplier assessments, comprehensive market analyses, and transparent negotiations. By building strong relationships and contracts, we mitigate risks and foster a collaborative environment that propels projects forward.

3. Expediting: Timely Execution for Project Momentum

In the fast-paced world of engineering, time is of the essence. Our expediting process is finely tuned for the timely delivery of materials and services. We understand that delays can have a domino effect on project timelines. Through streamlined expediting, we keep projects on track, maintaining momentum and delivering results on time.

4. Contract Management: Navigating with Transparency

Transparent and effective contract management is essential for project success. We prioritize clarity in communication, adherence to contract terms, and accurate record-keeping. Our commitment to transparency builds trust with clients and suppliers alike, ensuring that everyone involved is on the same page throughout the project lifecycle.

Our Team recognizes that successful projects begin with effective procurement. By avoiding traps and pitfalls, we guarantee that every step of the procurement process contributes to the overall success of your project. Prospective and existing clients can trust us to navigate project complexities with precision and deliver excellence every time.
